This Semester I was given the assignment from the Vice President of the School to teach on Spiritual Formation. I had no idea when he asked me to teach this class that I would love it as much as I do.
One of the assignments that I gave the students was a day of solitude. Imagine life without the telephone, cell phone, text messaging, internet, music, iPod and speech. What are you left with after these "external" pleasures are are eliminated from your life? Simply put you are left with yourself and God!
I am proud of my students on how they engaged with God on this day of solitude! They really removed themselves to be alone with God. As a result of this discipline, countless students stated that they had no idea how much they relied on friends, music and "external" pleasures of life. They had concluded from this discipline that their lifestyle had drowned out God's rightfulf place in their life.
Thank you class for really engaging in this project!
I am very proud of you!

Our Pastor keeps pushing us to take a day every so often to just shut everything off and tune in to what God is trying to say. It seems so impossible.
Thanks for your comments.
Two things:
Look how many times Jesus seperated himself in solitude. You will be surprized by the frequency in which He practiced this discipline.
Secondly, if you cannot take a day, start by taking a half day or "Little Solitudes."
Pastor Dave,
I remember when you were 16. I thought the only open door you were worried about was the bathroom door. This is good reading.
